Blake Architects have helped me with a number of projects over the last 10 years, ranging from inventive design of an old Pig building, refurbishing and extending a village house to inspired design of old war buildings and foundations near to a WW2 airfield.

The most recent and most testing from a planning perspective was a stable/equestrian complex on the footings of an Officers camp next to the WW2 Bibury Airfield. The historic maps were there to see but careful negotiations and reasoned arguments led to a sound proposal. The neighbours to the stable yard were not overly keen and objected, however the basis of our sound proposal meant that we eventually won through.

Previously they gained planning permission next door for a 6 bedroom house from a war building that was believed to be the officers communal mess room.

Jonathan has a good eye for space and an inventive, create and modern take on what at first site may seem like ordinary buildings

The end result is that we will be able to create a racehorse training facility with trainer and staff accusation all in one compact, well designed space.

We are really happy with the product (5 barn conversions), people are booking to stay with us from all over the world with enquires from Australia to America. We have an amazing conversion rate once people have seen the barns and online guides rate us along with Soho Farmhouse and Daylesford as places to stay in the Cotswolds. From our first meeting, we were confident that Jonathan and Misha completely understood our brief of creatively modernising our listed town house and it was a joy to work with them for the project. Blake Architects were commissioned by Bidwells, on behalf of the Manydown Estate, to design a new country house in the rolling and rural South Downs near Basingstoke. The brief we gave was to gain approval for a marketable six-bedroom house which had a traditional appearance that would fit with the brick vernacular of local houses and the adjacent Listed Barn and Granary.

The design met our requirements for a mix of traditional and modern living spaces and cleverly, the house appeared to have evolved as part of the farm over time. The sympathetic designs in large part helped us achieve a difficult planning approval next to Listed Buildings and the South Downs AONB.
