House extension completed

The clients asked us to consider how an extra bedroom could be provided. The cottage is unusual in that at one end it is octagonally shaped in plan and at the other a single storey L shaped wing. We considered raising the roof on the single storey wing but found this impacted on the charachter of the cottage. We therefore proposed a bedroom that would extend the single storey wing and connect with the classic english garden.

The modernist approach would have been to have a level access between the bedroom and garden with floor to ceiling glazing but we felt that in this setting a more subtle approach was required. We proposed a glass to glass corner which focuses ones gaze into the garden when in the room yet with a higher cill provides a degree of privacy. Access which will be occasional is provided through a window which is lowered to allow one to step up and over and into the garden.

The extension whilst not entirely traditional clearly shows the evolution of the building and adds a new younger chapter to the story of the house.
