WHO ARE WE?
After graduating from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, followed by ARB accreditation at the University of Westminster, Jonathan Nettleton gained valuable experience with Dannatt, Johnson on a wide range of historic projects including Kew Gardens, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and Terwick Wood, a new modernist country house that was exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts. He returned to the Cotswold countryside of his childhood to launch Blake Architects in 2011.
Now heading a diverse and experienced team, Blake Architects offer clients the full range of architect’s services – from initial briefs through to handover of keys – and enjoy the diversity of commissions that come to us.
We have sensitively restored historic barns and private houses, and breathed life into hotels, holiday homes, shops, offices and schools. We have engaged with and challenged our clients’ briefs and met demanding planning constraints with multi-faceted and targeted approaches. And with every project, we have crafted deeply personal yet pragmatic homes, or conceived viable commercial and charismatic yet functional workspaces to meet our clients’ business plans.
Our open-plan studio is a converted Cotswold barn set in a beautiful village between Cirencester and Cheltenham. Designed by Jonathan, the premises underpin our core values. Highly insulated and heated from a ground source heat pump, large windows minimise our energy use and reduce our carbon footprint.
If you come and see us, you’ll find we’re a thoughtful balance of traditional and modern – from our library of inspiring books on classical, vernacular and modern architecture to the latest technology and visualisation representation. We’re equally at ease producing beautiful hand drawn sketches of a proposed project as we are generating state-of-the-art Virtual Reality walk-throughs or scripting code.
We are a RIBA Chartered Practice, qualified in Passivhaus design, members of the Green Register and enthusiastic signatories of Architects Declare. Buildings and construction have a major impact on our environment, and we are proud to be at the forefront of designing better, more sustainable spaces that will stand the test of time.
